Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A northeast monsoon is affecting southern China. Besides, showers are affecting the northern part of the South China Sea.

At 4 p.m., Typhoon Doksuri was centred about 190 kilometres west of Xisha. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the vicinity south of Hainan Island and Vietnam and intensify gradually. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Talim was centred about 780 kilometres southwest of Kagoshima. It is forecast to move north at about 12 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. Sunny intervals tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 27 and 32 degrees. Moderate to fresh easterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Mainly fine and very hot over the weekend and early next week.

Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 14 September 2017

Warnings:
Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

Weather Situation:
Severe Tropical Storm Doksuri has intensified into a Typhoon. At 4 p.m., Doksuri with maximum sustained winds of about 130 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.5 degrees north, 110.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the vicinity south of Hainan Island and Vietnam and intensify gradually. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Talim with maximum sustained winds of about 195 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 27.2 degrees north, 124.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move north at about 12 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 140900 UTC, Super Typhoon Talim (1718) with central pressure 925 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two seven point two degrees north (27.2 N) one two four point two degrees east (124.2 E) and is forecast to move north at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 105 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 270 nautical miles.

At 140900 UTC, Typhoon Doksuri (1719) with central pressure 960 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one six point seven degrees north (16.7 N) one one zero point six degrees east (110.6 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 75 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
