Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is bringing cooler weather to Guangdong. Locally, temperatures over the territory this morning were generally three to four degrees lower than those of yesterday.

At 8 a.m., Tropical Storm Khanun was centred about 400 kilometres north of Manila. It is forecast to move west-southwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the vicinity of Luzon, enter the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly fine and dry. The maximum temperature will be about 30 degrees. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, occasionally strong offshore.

Outlook : Some rain later tomorrow. Weather deteriorating with heavy rain and squalls in the following couple of days.

Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 5:30 a.m. on 13 October 2017

Warnings:
Gale force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters.

Weather Situation:
At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.3 degrees north, 121.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-southwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the vicinity of Luzon, enter the South China Sea and intensify gradually. Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Khanun, it will be windy with heavy rain over the south China coastal waters.

North to northeast force 6 to 7.
Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.
Rough seas.

Nan'ao:
North to northeast force 8 to 9.
Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 122100 UTC, Tropical Storm Khanun (1720) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one eight point two degrees north (18.2 N) one two one point five degrees east (121.5 E) and is forecast to move west-southwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
