Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A dry northeast monsoon is affecting the coast of Guangdong.

At 8 p.m., Tropical Storm Khanun was centred about 430 kilometres south-southeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to move west at about 15 kilometres per hour across the South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Hainan Island to Leizhou Peninsula.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly fine and dry tonight and tomorrow morning. Becoming cloudy with a few rain patches later. There will be swells later. Temperatures will range between 24 and 29 degrees. Fresh north to northeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground.

Outlook : Windy with heavy squally showers in the following couple of days. Weather will improve midweek next week.

Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 13 October 2017

Warnings:
Gale force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters.

Weather Situation:
At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.2 degrees north, 118.7 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 15 kilometres per hour across the South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Hainan Island to Leizhou Peninsula. Under the combined effect of Khanun and the northeast monsoon, it will be windy with heavy rain over the south China coastal waters.

Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
North force 6 to 7.
Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms later.
Rough seas.

Nan'ao and Shanwei:
North to northeast force 8 to 9.
Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:
North force 7 to 8.
Scattered heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 131200 UTC, Tropical Storm Khanun (1720) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one seven point two degrees north (17.2 N) one one eight point six degrees east (118.6 E) and is forecast to move west at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
