Warnings:
Gale force winds in all areas.

Weather Situation:
At noon, Severe Tropical Storm Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.4 degrees north, 118.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour across the South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Hainan Island to Leizhou Peninsula. Under the combined effect of Khanun and the northeast monsoon, it will be windy with heavy rain over the south China coastal waters.

North to northeast force 6 to 7, occasionally force 8 later.
Squally showers and thunderstorms later.
Rough to very rough seas.

Nan'ao and Shanwei:
North to northeast force 8 to 9.

South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:
North force 7 to 8.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 1 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Khanun was estimated to be about 670 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 17.5 degrees north 118.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour across the South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Hainan Island to Leizhou Peninsula.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 140300 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Khanun (1720) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one seven point three degrees north (17.3 N) one one eight point three degrees east (118.3 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

One one four point four degrees east (114.4 E)
Maximum winds 65 knots.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
