Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 16:45 HKT 14/Oct/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 5 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Khanun was estimated to be about 600 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.0 degrees north 117.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

Winds were occasionally strong offshore and on high ground in Hong Kong in the past few hours. With Khanun continuing to track northwestward and moving closer to the South China coastal area, and together with the effect of the northeast monsoon, local winds will strengthen gradually. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tonight.

Khanun is expected to edge closer to the south China coast tomorrow. Local weather will deteriorate significantly. Members of the public should take precautionary measures against high winds and flooding as soon as possible.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

2. People living in wooden huts and in low-lying areas should take necessary precautions against strong winds and flooding.

3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

4. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

5. Engineers, architects and contractors should make sure that scaffoldings, hoardings and other temporary structures are secured.

6. Owners of shop signs, advertisements and TV aerials which overhang public thoroughfares or which are situated on tops of buildings should make sure that the fastenings and framework of these structures are secured.

7. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
