    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 14 October 2017

    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.3 degrees north, 117.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the northern part of South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island. Under the combined effect of Khanun and the northeast monsoon, it will be windy with heavy showers over the south China coastal waters.

    North to northeast force 6 to 7, occasionally force 8.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 10 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Khanun was estimated to be about 530 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.7 degrees north 117.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify. It will move in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 141200 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Khanun (1720) with central pressure 975 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one eight point five degrees north (18.5 N) one one seven point six degrees east (117.6 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 270 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 240 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Two zero point three degrees north (20.3 N)
    One one three point zero degrees east (113.0 E)
    Maximum winds 75 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (13 Oct 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
