Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 04:45 HKT 15/Oct/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 5 a.m., Typhoon Khanun was estimated to be about 330 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.8 degrees north 115.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

In the past few hours, Khanun continued to edge closer to the coast of Guangdong and showed signs of further intensification. According to the present forecast track, Khanun will pass about 200 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong in the late afternoon. Local winds will strengthen significantly during the day. The Observatory will issue higher signal this morning.

Under the influence of the outer rainbands of Khanun, there will be occasional heavy showers and squalls today. There will also be flooding in low-lying areas. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Waglan Island and Cheung Chau were 85, 67 and 57 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. You are advised not to delay in taking all precautions to protect your home or property. Make sure now that all loose objects are secure. Porch furniture, flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors. Check again and make sure all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

3. People should avoid walking or working in areas exposed to gales and squalls. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

4. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

One one one point two degrees east (111.2 E)
Maximum winds 85 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 161800 UTC
One eight point seven degrees north (18.7 N)
One zero eight point zero degrees east (108.0 E)
Maximum winds 25 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 171800 UTC
Dissipated over sea.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
