    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Storm force winds in Shanwei. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, Severe Typhoon Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.2 degrees north, 114.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea. It will move in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northeast quarter.

    At noon, Severe Typhoon Khanun was centred about 230 kilometres south of Hong Kong (near 20.2 degrees north 114.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

    According to the present forecast track, Khanun is expected to pass about 200 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong in the next few hours. The Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 is expected to remain in force for most of the afternoon.

    Northerlies are now affecting Hong Kong and will gradually change to east to northeasterlies. Areas which were previously sheltered may become exposed. Members of the public should stay on the alert.

    Tides are currently running more than 0.5 metres above normal. A high tide will occur tonight and cause flooding in some low-lying areas.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Waglan Island and Sha Chau were 110, 81 and 67 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 152, 94 and 82 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

    2. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    3. Since seas are very rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    4. Owners of neon signs are reminded that they should now arrange for the electricity supply to their signs to be cut off.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Khanun (1720) has intensified into a Severe Typhoon with central pressure 950 hectopascals. At 150300 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point two degrees north (20.2 N) one one four point one degrees east (114.1 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 85 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 270 nautical miles elsewhere.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (14 Oct 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
