    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Storm force winds in Shanwei. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., Severe Typhoon Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.6 degrees north, 113.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northeast quarter.

    At 6 p.m., Severe Typhoon Khanun was centred about 260 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.6 degrees north 112.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea in the general direction of Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island.

    With Khanun continuing to depart from Hong Kong, local winds show signs of weakening, but gale force winds are still affecting parts of the territory at first. When winds weaken further, the Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tonight.

    Tides are currently running around 1 metre above normal. A high tide will occur tonight and cause flooding in some low-lying areas.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau Beach and Tai Mei Tuk were 73 and 67 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 100 and 101 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Although the tropical cyclone is moving away from Hong Kong, gales are expected to persist for some time. You are advised to stay indoors until winds moderate and it is safe to go out. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    2. As gales and violent squalls are still occurring in places, precautions should not yet be relaxed.

    3. Since seas are very rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Typhoon Khanun (1720) has weakened into a Typhoon with central pressure 955 hectopascals. At 150900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N) one one two point seven degrees east (112.7 E) and is forecast to move west at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 270 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 240 nautical miles elsewhere.

    One nine point eight degrees north (19.8 N)
    One zero eight point six degrees east (108.6 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
