Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 20:45 HKT 15/Oct/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 9 p.m., Typhoon Khanun was estimated to be about 310 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.8 degrees north 111.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea towards the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula.

With Khanun continuing to depart from Hong Kong, winds over Hong Kong will weaken further. The Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No. 1 in a couple of hours.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau Beach were 56 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 75 kilometres per hour.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. You should not relax taking precautions as strong winds are still blowing and unsecured objects may be blown down. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

2. It is not yet safe for small craft and fishing vessels to leave typhoon shelters.

3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 270 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 240 nautical miles elsewhere.

Forecast position and intensity at 161200 UTC
One nine point five degrees north (19.5 N)
One zero eight point four degrees east (108.4 E)
Maximum winds 35 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 171200 UTC
Dissipated over sea.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
