Bulletin updated at 00:45 HKT 17/Oct/2017

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A strong easterly airstream affected the coast of eastern Guangdong yesterday. Locally, it was mainly cloudy with sunny intervals and occasional showers. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places. A dry continental airstream will bring fine weather to southern China in the middle and latter parts of this week. Tropical Cyclone Khanun weakened from a typhoon into an area of low pressure progressively yesterday.

Besides, the area of low pressure over the seas east of the Philippines intensified into a tropical storm gradually yesterday and was named Lan. At 11 p.m. last night, Lan was centred about 410 kilometres west-northwest of Yap. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour across the seas east of the Philippines and intensify progressively.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Mainly cloudy. A few showers at first. Sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will range between 24 and 28 degrees. Fresh east to northeasterly winds, strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Becoming fine and dry in the following few days.

Significant Weather Information (SIGMET)

The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

Bulletin issued at 15:30 HKT 16/Oct/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning

Tropical Depression Khanun (1720) has weakened into an area of low pressure with central pressure 1002 hectopascals. At 160600 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point one degrees north (20.1 N) one zero nine point three degrees east (109.3 E).

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 20 knots.

No further warnings on this area of low pressure will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
