Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 04:45 HKT 18/Jul/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Son-Tinh was estimated to be about 530 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 18.9 degrees north 110.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 30 kilometres per hour across Hainan Island.

Son-Tinh will soon make landfall near Wanning on Hainan Island. It will continue to move away from Hong Kong. Despite this, Hong Kong is still affected by the outer rain bands of Son-Tinh. There are squally showers as well as occasional gales offshore and on high ground. The public should stay on the alert.

With the departure of Son-Tinh, local winds are expected to subside gradually this morning. When the threat of strong winds diminishes, the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 or cancelling all tropical cyclone warning signals.

As seas are rough and there are swells, members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau, Tate's Cairn and Waglan Island were 59, 57 and 57 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 69, 77 and 69 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

2. Strong winds are still blowing. You should not relax taking precautions. Beware of falling objects in winds. Do not touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

3. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

One zero five point five degrees east (105.5 E)
Maximum winds 35 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 191800 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
