Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 18:45 HKT 11/Aug/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 7 p.m., the tropical depression over the coast of western Guangdong was estimated to be about 290 kilometres west of Hong Kong (near 21.8 degrees north 111.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move slowly, lingering over the coast of western Guangdong.

According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will maintain a distance from Hong Kong. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will be in effect for a period of time.

The rainbands associated with the tropical depression are expected to bring occasional showers and squalls to the territory in the next couple of days.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Every precaution should be taken. Objects likely to be blown away should be secured or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4. There may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

5. Fishing vessels and low power vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible and be secured properly with moorings.

6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
