    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.0 degrees north, 112.8 degrees east, it is forecast to move west slowly towards the vicinity of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East force 5 to 6, becoming south to southeast force 5 to 6 later.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    South to southeast force 5 to 6.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At noon, the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was estimated to be about 200 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.0 degrees north 112.8 degrees east). It is forecast to move west slowly in the general direction of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    The movement and development of the Tropical Depression are rather slow. Winds over Hong Kong are not expected to strengthen significantly during the day today. Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force for most of the daytime. While the Tropical Depression is expected to move gradually away from Hong Kong, it is expected to further intensify. Winds over Hong Kong will strengthen gradually tonight. The Observatory will consider issuing Strong Wind Signal No. 3 later today.

    (Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

    1. Since there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    2. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    3. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    4. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    5. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    An area of low pressure over the coastal waters of western Guangdong has intensified into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 992 hectopascals. At 170300 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point zero degrees north (21.0 N) one one two point eight degrees east (112.8 E) and is forecast to move west slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    Two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N)
    One one zero point nine degrees east (110.9 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    Two zero point four degrees north (20.4 N)

    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (16 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
