Outlook : Still squally showers tomorrow and there will be swells. Showers will ease off gradually over the weekend.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 1:00 p.m. on 17 August 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.0 degrees north, 112.8 degrees east, it is forecast to move west slowly towards the vicinity of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East force 5 to 6, becoming south to southeast force 5 to 6 later.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    South to southeast force 5 to 6.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    South of Hong Kong:
    Southwest force 6 to 7.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.

     AT 11 A.M., THE TROPICAL DEPRESSION WAS CENTRED
     NEAR 21.0 DEGREES NORTH, 112.8 DEGREES EAST.  IT
     IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST SLOWLY IN THE GENERAL
     DIRECTION OF LEIZHOU AND INTENSIFY GRADUALLY.

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 3 p.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was estimated to be about 210 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.0 degrees north 112.7 degrees east). It is forecast to move west slowly in the general direction of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 170600 UTC, Tropical Depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with central pressure 992 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point nine degrees north (20.9 N) one one two point seven degrees east (112.7 E) and is forecast to move west slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 180600 UTC
    Two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N)
    One one zero point eight degrees east (110.8 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 190600 UTC
    Two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N)
    One zero six point seven degrees east (106.7 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 200600 UTC
    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (16 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
