Cloudy with squally showers. Showers will be heavy at times tonight and tomorrow morning. Moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. Winds will strengthen gradually. There will be swells. Temperatures will range between 26 and 29 degrees.

Outlook : Still showery on Friday. Showers will ease off over the weekend.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 17 August 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.9 degrees north, 112.7 degrees east, it is forecast to move west slowly towards the vicinity of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    South to southeast force 5 to 6, becoming force 7.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    South to southeast force 6 to 7.

    Shanwei and South of Hong Kong:
    Southwest force 6 to 7, up to force 8 tonight.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 5 p.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was estimated to be about 230 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.8 degrees north 112.7 degrees east). It is forecast to move west slowly in the general direction of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    The Tropical Depression moved rather slowly over the past few hours. According to the present forecast, the Tropical Depression will intensify gradually. Winds over Hong Kong are also expected to strengthen progressively tonight. The Observatory will consider issuing Strong Wind Signal No. 3 tonight.

    1. Since there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    2. People living in wooden huts and in low-lying areas should take necessary precautions against strong winds and flooding.

    3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 170600 UTC, Tropical Depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with central pressure 992 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point nine degrees north (20.9 N) one one two point seven degrees east (112.7 E) and is forecast to move west slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    One one zero point eight degrees east (110.8 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (16 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
