    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 17 August 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.7 degrees north, 112.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move west slowly towards the vicinity of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 was issued at 10:15 p.m.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 10 p.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was estimated to be about 240 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.7 degrees north 112.6 degrees east). It is forecast to move west slowly in the general direction of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    According to the present forecast, the Tropical Depression will intensify further. It will move away from Hong Kong slowly tomorrow morning. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force overnight and most part of tomorrow morning. Unless the Tropical Depression intensifies rapidly, the chance of issuing the Gale or Storm Signal, No.8 is not high.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping were 58 kilometres per hour.

    1. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    2. You are advised not to delay in taking all precautions to protect your home or property. Make sure now that all loose objects are secure. Porch furniture, flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors. Check again and make sure all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    3. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 171200 UTC, the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point seven degrees north (20.7 N) one one two point six degrees east (112.6 E) and is forecast to move west slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    Two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N)
    One zero nine point seven degrees east (109.7 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (16 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
