Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An area of low pressure over the coastal waters of western Guangdong intensified into a tropical depression yesterday morning. The associated unsettled weather affected the south China coast and the northern part of the South China Sea. Locally, there were squally showers yesterday and showers were heavy at times. The tropical cyclone is expected to intensify gradually, move towards the vicinity of Beibu Wan today and tomorrow and continue to bring squally showers to the south China coast and the northern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Strong south to southeasterly winds. Cloudy with squally showers. Showers will be heavy at times at first. There will be swells. Temperatures will range between 26 and 29 degrees. Winds will moderate later.

Outlook : Still showery on Friday. Showers will ease off over the weekend.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.7 degrees north, 112.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move west slowly towards the vicinity of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 1 a.m., the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was estimated to be about 240 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.7 degrees north 112.6 degrees east). It is forecast to move west slowly in the general direction of Leizhou and intensify gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 171500 UTC, the tropical depression over the coastal waters of western Guangdong with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point seven degrees north (20.7 N) one one two point six degrees east (112.6 E) and is forecast to move west slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N)
    One zero nine point three degrees east (109.3 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    Two zero point five degrees north (20.5 N)

    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (17 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
