    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 10:00 a.m. on 18 August 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    The tropical storm over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was named Dianmu. At 10 a.m., Dianmu with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.1 degrees north, 111.7 degrees east, it is forecast to move west at about 15 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of Beibu Wan.

    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    The tropical storm over the coastal waters of western Guangdong was named Dianmu. At 10 a.m., Dianmu was estimated to be about 290 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.1 degrees north 111.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 15 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Beibu Wan.

    In the past few hours, Dianmu moved westwards steadily and gradually away from Hong Kong. According to the present forecast track, local winds will moderate gradually. The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 before noon. Under the influence of Dianmu's outer rainbands, there will be occasional squally showers during the day. Local winds will remain strong over the western part of the territory and on high ground at first.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping and Waglan Island were 53 and 46 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    2. You should not relax taking precautions as strong winds are still blowing and unsecured objects may be blown down. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 180000 UTC, the tropical storm Dianmu (1608) with central pressure 985 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two one point zero degrees north (21.0 N) one one one point eight degrees east (111.8 E) and is forecast to move west at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over southern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    One zero seven point eight degrees east (107.8 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (17 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
