    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, Tropical Storm Dianmu with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.1 degrees north, 111.3 degrees east, it is forecast to move west at about 15 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of Beibu Wan.

    South to southeast force 5 to 6, occasionally force 7 at first.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    At noon, Tropical Storm Dianmu was estimated to be about 330 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.1 degrees north 111.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 15 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Beibu Wan.

    As Dianmu moves progressively away from Hong Kong, local winds will moderate gradually. However, winds will remain strong offshore and on high ground at first. When local winds subside further in the afternoon, the Observatory will cancel all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals. As there are swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 180300 UTC, Tropical Storm Dianmu (1608) with central pressure 985 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two one point one degrees north (21.1 N) one one one point four degrees east (111.4 E) and is forecast to move west at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over southern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N)
    One zero seven point two degrees east (107.2 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (17 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
