Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

All signals were cancelled at 1:15 p.m.

At 1 p.m., Tropical Storm Dianmu was centred about 350 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.1 degrees north 111.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 18 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Beibu Wan.

As Dianmu continues to move away from Hong Kong, local winds have generally subsided but occasional strong winds will still affect offshore areas and high ground at first. The outer rainbands of Dianmu will also bring occasional squally showers to the territory. As there are swells, members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over southern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 190600 UTC
Two zero point five degrees north (20.5 N)
One zero six point eight degrees east (106.8 E)
Maximum winds 40 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 200600 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
