During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 4. The intensity of UV radiation was moderate.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southwesterly airstream is bringing showers to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, more than 10 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over Lantau Island in the past couple of hours.

The area of low pressure near the Ryukyu Islands has intensified into a tropical depression and was named Namtheun. At 10 a.m., Namtheun was centred about 240 kilometres south of Okinawa. It is forecast to move northeast at about 20 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the western part of Japan.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly cloudy with showers and a few thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times at first. Moderate southwesterly winds, occasionally fresh offshore.

Outlook : Showers will be heavy at times in the next couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    A southwesterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    The low pressure area over the Ryukyu Islands has intensified into a tropical depression and was named Namtheun. At 10 a.m., Namtheun with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 24.1 degrees north, 128.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northeast at about 20 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the western part of Japan.

    Southwest force 4 to 5.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao, Shanwei, South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:

    Moderate seas, becoming rough later.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 191200 UTC, Tropical Storm Dianmu (1608) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N) one zero five point four degrees east (105.4 E) and is forecast to weaken and move west at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Storm will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (31 Aug 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
