Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A trough of low pressure continues to linger around the coastal areas of Guangdong.

At 2 a.m., Typhoon Meranti was centred about 1310 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 24 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon to Taiwan and continue to intensify. Besides, an area of low pressure is bringing unsettled weather to the southern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly cloudy with isolated showers. There will be one or two thunderstorms at first. Hot with sunny periods during the day. Temperatures will range between 26 and 32 degrees. Light winds, becoming moderate easterly winds.

Outlook : Mainly fine and hot in the following couple of days. A few squally showers during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after.

    Weather Situation:
    A trough of low pressure continues to bring unsettled weather to the south China coastal waters. Besides, an area of low pressure near 13 degrees north, 113 degrees east is bringing unsettled weather to its adjacent waters. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour and intensify gradually.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East to southeast force 4 to 5.
    Isolated showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao, Shanwei, South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:
    East to southeast force 4 to 5.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 191200 UTC, Tropical Storm Dianmu (1608) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N) one zero five point four degrees east (105.4 E) and is forecast to weaken and move west at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Storm will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (11 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
