At noon at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 31 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 71 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 10. The intensity of UV radiation was very high.

Tropical Cyclone Meranti is expected to edge closer to the coast of southern China mid-week this week, bringing windy weather and squally showers to the region during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after. There will also be swells. Please note that the change in weather may affect the outdoor activities during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after. Please refer to the latest weather forecast issued by the Observatory.

Hot weather might cause adverse health effects. The Observatory advises the public to stay on the alert.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The anticyclone over southern China is bringing generally fine weather to the region.

At noon, Severe Typhoon Meranti was centred about 1070 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 26 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon to Taiwan and continue to intensify. Meanwhile, the area of low pressure over the southern part of the South China Sea was centred about 420 kilometres east-southeast of Da Nang. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour towards the central part of Vietnam.

Mainly fine and hot. Light winds, becoming moderate easterly winds.

Outlook : Very hot in the next couple of days. Windy with squally showers during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after.

    Weather Situation:
    An easterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At noon, Tropical Depression with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 14.0 degrees north, 111.5 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour towards the central part of Vietnam. Meanwhile, Severe Typhoon Meranti with maximum sustained winds of about 175 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.3 degrees north, 129.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 26 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon to Taiwan and continue to intensify.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 120300 UTC, Tropical Depression over the South China Sea with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one four point zero degrees north (14.0 N) one one one point six degrees east (111.6 E) and is forecast to weaken and move west-northwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    One five point nine degrees north (15.9 N)
    One zero seven point seven degrees east (107.7 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
