At 5 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 31 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 70 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 2. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Tropical Cyclone Meranti is expected to edge closer to the coast of southern China mid-week this week, bringing windy weather and squally showers to the region during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after. There will also be swells. Please note that the change in weather may affect the outdoor activities during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after. Please refer to the latest weather forecast issued by the Observatory.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The anticyclone over southern China is bringing generally fine weather to the region. Locally, temperatures over many places rose to around 33 degrees in the afternoon.

Severe Typhoon Meranti has intensified into a super typhoon. At 4 p.m., Meranti was centred about 1000 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 26 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon to Taiwan. Meanwhile, the tropical depression over the central part of the South China Sea was centred about 320 kilometres east-southeast of Da Nang. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the central part of Vietnam.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly fine and very hot apart from isolated showers. One or two thunderstorms later tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 27 and 33 degrees. Moderate easterly winds, occasionally fresh offshore overnight.

Outlook : Very hot on Wednesday. Windy with squally showers during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 12 September 2016

    Warnings:
    Strong winds in Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., the tropical depression over the central part of the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 14.5 degrees north, 110.7 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the central part of Vietnam. Severe Typhoon Meranti has intensified into a super typhoon. At 4 p.m., Meranti with maximum sustained winds of about 185 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.6 degrees north, 128.9 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 26 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon to Taiwan.

    East force 4 to 5.
    Isolated showers, one or two thunderstorms later.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao, Shanwei and South of Hong Kong:

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 120600 UTC, Tropical Depression over the central part of South China Sea with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one four point four degrees north (14.4 N) one one one point zero degrees east (111.0 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    One six point zero degrees north (16.0 N)
    One zero six point nine degrees east (106.9 E)
    Maximum winds 30 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (11 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
