Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The anticyclone over southern China is bringing generally fine weather to the region.

At noon, Super Typhoon Meranti was centred about 560 kilometres southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across Luzon Strait. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Malakas was centred about 550 kilometres north of Yap. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Taiwan. Tropical Depression Rai was centred about 150 kilometres west of Da Nang. It is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across Indochina Peninsula, and dissipate gradually.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Isolated showers. Very hot with sunny periods in the afternoon. One or two thunderstorms later. Moderate easterly winds, occasionally fresh offshore at first.

Outlook : Very hot tomorrow. Windy with squally showers and swells during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Showers will ease off later on Friday.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 12:30 p.m. on 13 September 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, Tropical Depression Rai with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.0 degrees north, 106.8 degrees east, it is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across Indochina Peninsula, and dissipate gradually. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Meranti with maximum sustained winds of about 230 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 19.8 degrees north, 124.7 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across Luzon Strait.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Super Typhoon Meranti (1614) has entered the area of responsibility of the Hong Kong Observatory.
    At 130300 UTC, Super Typhoon Meranti (1614) with central pressure 900 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one nine point eight degrees north (19.8 N) one two four point nine degrees east (124.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 125 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Two one point zero degrees north (21.0 N)
    One two zero point one degrees east (120.1 E)
    Maximum winds 120 knots.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 130000 UTC, Tropical Depression Rai (1615) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one five point nine degrees north (15.9 N) one zero seven point five degrees east (107.5 E) and is forecast to weaken and move west at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (12 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
