Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The anticyclone over southern China is bringing generally fine weather to the region.

At 8 p.m., Super Typhoon Meranti was centred about 370 kilometres southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the Luzon Strait. Besides, Tropical Storm Malakas has intensified into a severe tropical storm. At 10 p.m., Malakas was centred about 1460 kilometres south-southeast of Okinawa. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Taiwan.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Isolated showers. Very hot with sunny periods but some haze tomorrow. Isolated squally thunderstorms later. Temperatures will range between 26 and 33 degrees. Moderate easterly winds, becoming north to northwesterlies tomorrow.

Outlook : A few squally showers during the Mid-Autumn Festival, windier offshore and on high ground. Showers will ease off gradually on Friday.

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao. Gale force winds in Shanwei. Strong winds in south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Super Typhoon Meranti with maximum sustained winds of about 240 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.3 degrees north, 123.1 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the Luzon strait. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Rai has weakened into an area of low pressure.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East force 4 to 5, becoming north to northwest force 4 to 5 later.
    Isolated showers and squally thunderstorms.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao:
    East to northeast force 5 to 6, becoming north to northwest force 9 to 10.

    Moderate to rough seas, becoming high later.

    Shanwei:

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 131200 UTC, Super Typhoon Meranti (1614) with central pressure 890 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two zero point five degrees north (20.5 N) one two two point nine degrees east (122.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 130 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 141200 UTC
    Two two point one degrees north (22.1 N)
    One one eight point eight degrees east (118.8 E)
    Maximum winds 95 knots.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 130000 UTC, Tropical Depression Rai (1615) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one five point nine degrees north (15.9 N) one zero seven point five degrees east (107.5 E) and is forecast to weaken and move west at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (12 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to

range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
