Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 10:45 HKT 14/Sep/2016

Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 11 a.m., Super Typhoon Meranti was estimated to be about 640 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 21.8 degrees north 120.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Fujuan.

Meranti took on a more northwesterly track this morning. It will move across Taiwan Strait, and edge closer to the coast of Fujian. According to the present forecast track, local winds today are not expected to strengthen significantly and the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No.3 today is not high. Meranti is expected to be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning, skirting around 400km to the east of the territory. There will be occasionally strong winds over offshore waters and on high ground tonight and tomorrow morning.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

2. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

3. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

4. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 120 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 150000 UTC
Two four point two degrees north (24.2 N)
One one seven point three degrees east (117.3 E)
Maximum winds 65 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 160000 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
