    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 14 September 2016

    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in Nan'ao. Storm force winds in Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., Super Typhoon Meranti with maximum sustained winds of about 185 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.8 degrees north, 119.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Fujian.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    West to northwest force 5 to 6.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    West to northwest force 10 to 11, becoming cyclonic force 12.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very high seas, becoming phenomenal.

    Shanwei:
    West to northwest force 7 to 8, up to force 11 overnight.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough seas, becoming very high later.

    South of Hong Kong:
    West to northwest force 5 to 6, occasionally force 7.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Shangchuan Dao:
    West to northwest force 5 to 6.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 5 p.m., Super Typhoon Meranti was estimated to be about 550 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 23.0 degrees north 119.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Fujian.

    According to the latest forecast track, Meranti will make landfall over the coast of Fujian more than 400 kilometres away from Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Meranti's effect to Hong Kong will decrease and local winds are not expected to strengthen significantly. The need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is not high.

    Meranti will move away from Hong Kong gradually and weaken after making landfall tomorrow morning. When it no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.

    1. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    2. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    3. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 140600 UTC, Super Typhoon Meranti (1614) with central pressure 930 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two two point five degrees north (22.5 N) one one nine point eight degrees east (119.8 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 100 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

    Two five point four degrees north (25.4 N)
    One one seven point zero degrees east (117.0 E)
    Maximum winds 50 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (13 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
