Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A relatively dry continental airstream is affecting the coast of Guangdong. Meanwhile, the cloud band associated with Tropical Cyclone Meranti is covering eastern Guangdong.

Severe Tropical Storm Meranti has weakened into a tropical storm. At 4 p.m., Meranti was centred about 230 kilometres south-southeast of Nanchang. It is forecast to move north at about 22 kilometres per hour, continue to enter inland and further weaken. At 4 p.m., Typhoon Malakas was centred about 1010 kilometres south of Okinawa. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 24 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Taiwan.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Cloudy period and isolated showers overnight. Hot and dry with sunny periods during the day tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 27 and 32 degrees. Light to moderate north to northwesterly winds.

Outlook : Mainly fine in the following couple of days. It will be dry early next week.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 15 September 2016

    Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    Severe Tropical Storm Meranti has weakened into a tropical storm. At 4 p.m., Meranti with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 26.8 degrees north, 117.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move north at about 22 kilometres per hour, continue to enter inland and further weaken. Meanwhile, Typhoon Malakas with maximum sustained winds of about 145 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.1 degrees north, 127.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 24 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Taiwan.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Tropical Storm Meranti (1614) has weakened into a Tropical Storm with central pressure 988 hectopascals. At 150600 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two six point five degrees north (26.5 N) one one six point nine degrees east (116.9 E) and is forecast to weaken and move north at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Storm will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (14 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
