Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A dry continental airstream continues to bring generally fine weather to Guangdong. Locally, the relative humidity over the territory were generally around 60 per cent around noon.

At noon, Severe Typhoon Malakas was centred about 330 kilometres southwest of Kagoshima. It is forecast to move northeast at about 25 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the southern part of Japan.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Mainly fine. Dry in the afternoon. Moderate northerly winds, becoming east to northeasterlies with one or two isolated showers later.

Outlook : Mainly cloudy with sunny periods in the next couple of days.

    Strong winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, Severe Typhoon Malakas with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 29.8 degrees north, 127.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move northeast at about 25 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the southern part of Japan.

    North force 4, becoming east to northeast force 4 to 5 later.
    Isolated showers.
    Moderate seas.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 181200 UTC, Typhoon Malakas (1616) with central pressure 955 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two eight point zero degrees north (28.0 N) one two five point one degrees east (125.1 E) and is forecast to move northeast at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over southeast quadrant, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Typhoon will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

    Three zero point seven degrees north (30.7 N)

    Maximum winds 70 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (18 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
