At 9 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 33 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 53 per cent.

Tropical Cyclone Megi will cross Taiwan Strait overnight and make landfall over the vicinity of Fujian tomorrow morning. It will then move inland and weaken rapidly. Local winds is expected to be fresh, occasionally strong on high ground. The Observatory will continue to closely monitor any change of the track of Megi and its effect on local weather.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subsidence airstream associated with Tropical Cyclone Megi is bringing very hot weather to Guangdong.

At 8 p.m., Severe Typhoon Megi was centred about 170 kilometres southwest of Taibei. It is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across Taiwan, and edge closer to the vicinity of Fujian.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly fine. Very hot at first. Becoming cloudy tomorrow with a few showers later. Temperatures will range between 27 and 32 degrees tomorrow. Moderate to fresh west to northwesterly winds, occasionally strong on high ground.

Outlook : Slightly cooler with a few showers in the following couple of days.

    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in Nan'ao. Gale force winds in Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Severe Typhoon Megi with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 23.9 degrees north, 120.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 22 kilometres per hour across Taiwan, and edge closer to the vicinity of Fujian.

    West to northwest force 4 to 5, up to force 6 later.
    Isolated showers and thunderstorms later.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    West to northwest force 11 to 12, becoming southwest force 8 to 9 later.

     IS AFFECTING GUANGDONG.  
     AT 4 P.M., SEVERE TYPHOON MEGI WAS CENTRED NEAR 24.2 DEGREES NORTH,
     121.3 DEGREES EAST.  IT IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST-NORTHWEST AT 
     ABOUT 12 KNOTS ACROSS TAIWAN AND EDGE CLOSER TO THE VICINITY OF FUJIAN.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Typhoon Megi (1617) has weakened into a Typhoon with central pressure 955 hectopascals. At 271200 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two three point eight degrees north (23.8 N) one two zero point five degrees east (120.5 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 281200 UTC
    Two four point eight degrees north (24.8 N)
    One one six point four degrees east (116.4 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 291200 UTC
    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
