At 6 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 30 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 61 per cent.

Tropical Cyclone Megi has made landfall near Quanzhou of Fujian. It will move inland and weaken rapidly. Chance of strong winds generally over Hong Kong is not high, but winds will be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. The Observatory will continue to closely monitor any change of the track of Megi and its effect on local weather.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A relatively dry continental airstream is affecting the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.

Typhoon Megi has made landfall near Quanzhou of Fujian. At 5 a.m., Megi was centred about 100 kilometres northeast of Xiamen. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour, entering inland.

Weather forecast for today

Sunny periods at first. Becoming cloudy with a few showers later. The maximum temperature will be about 32 degrees. Moderate to fresh west to northwesterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground.

Outlook : Slightly cooler with a few showers in the next couple of days.

    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in Nan'ao. Gale force winds in Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At 5 a.m., Typhoon Megi with maximum sustained winds of about 130 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 25.0 degrees north, 118.9 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour, entering inland.

    West to northwest force 4 to 5, occasionally up to force 6.
    Isolated showers and thunderstorms later.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:

II.  SYNOPSIS OF THE WEATHER SITUATION :
     THE SUBSIDENCE AIRSTREAM ASSOCIATED WITH
     TROPICAL CYCLONE MEGI IS AFFECTING GUANGDONG.
     MEGI HAS WEAKENED FROM A SEVERE TYPHOON INTO A
     TYPHOON.
     AT 11 P.M. LAST NIGHT, TYPHOON MEGI WAS CENTRED
     NEAR 23.8 DEGREES NORTH, 120.0 DEGREES EAST.  IT
     IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 12
     KNOTS ACROSS TAIWAN AND EDGE CLOSER TO THE
     VICINITY OF FUJIAN.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 272100 UTC, Typhoon Megi (1617) with central pressure 970 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two five point zero degrees north (25.0 N) one one eight point nine degrees east (118.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 65 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 282100 UTC
    Two five point seven degrees north (25.7 N)
    One one five point seven degrees east (115.7 E)
    Maximum winds 25 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (27 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
