    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 10:55 a.m. on 28 September 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Megi with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 24.9 degrees north, 117.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest or west at about 20 kilometres per hour across the inland areas of Fujian.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    West to northwest force 5 to 6.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms later.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    Southwest force 8 to 9, becoming force 6 to 7 later.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough to high seas, becoming rough later.

    Shanwei:
    Southwest force 7, becoming force 5 to 6 later.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    South of Hong Kong:

     SEV TURB AND SEV GUSTS.  GALE FORCE WINDS.
II.  SYNOPSIS OF THE WEATHER SITUATION :
     A RELATIVELY DRY CONTINENTAL AIRSTREAM IS
     AFFECTING THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER
     ESTUARY. MEANWHILE, RAINBANDS ASSOCIATED WITH
     THE TROPICAL CYCLONE MEGI IS COVERING THE
     EASTERN PART OF GUANGDONG.
     TYPHOON MEGI HAS WEAKENED INTO A SEVERE TROPICAL
     STORM. 
     AT 9 A.M., MEGI WAS CENTRED NEAR 25.1 DEGREES
     NORTH, 118.2 DEGREES EAST.  IT IS FORECAST TO
     MOVE WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 11 KNOTS, ENTERING
     INLAND.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 11 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Megi was estimated to be about 430 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong (near 24.9 degrees north 117.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the inland areas of Fujian.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Megi (1617) has weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 975 hectopascals. At 280000 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two five point one degrees north (25.1 N) one one eight point three degrees east (118.3 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 290000 UTC
    Two six point zero degrees north (26.0 N)
    One one five point six degrees east (115.6 E)
    Maximum winds 20 knots.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (27 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
