Mainly cloudy with a few showers. Becoming cooler tomorrow. Temperatures will fall from about 29 degrees at first to around 24 degrees tomorrow night. Moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground at first.

Outlook : Slightly cooler with a few showers in the following couple of days.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 28 September 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Megi with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 25.2 degrees north, 116.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across the inland areas of Fujian and weaken gradually.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    Northwest force 4 to 5, up to force 6 at first.
    A few showers.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    Southwest force 7 to 8, force 5 to 6 later.
    Occasional squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough seas, becoming moderate to rough later.

    Shanwei:
    Southwest force 7 to 8, becoming northwest force 5 to 6 later.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough seas, becoming moderate to rough later.

    South of Hong Kong:
    Northwest force 4 to 5, up to force 6 at first.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Megi was estimated to be about 390 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong (near 25.2 degrees north 116.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across the inland areas of Fujian and weaken gradually.

    As Megi continued to move inland, local winds showed sign of weakening but occasional strong winds still affected offshore areas and high ground. Megi is expected to weaken further. When it no longer poses any threat to Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.

    1. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 280900 UTC, Tropical Storm Megi (1617) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two five point one degrees north (25.1 N) one one six point five degrees east (116.5 E) and is forecast to weaken and move northwest or west-northwest at about 8 knots for the next 12 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (27 Sep 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
