Weather Information for South China Coastal Waters

Bulletin issued at 16:02 HKT 06/Oct/2016

At 4 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 31 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 63 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 2. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Tropical cyclone Aere will move across the northern part of the South China Sea in the next few days. Besides, the northeast monsoon will persist over southern China. As the circulation of the tropical cyclone is relatively small and compact, it will only bring significant impact to local weather when it gets relatively close to Hong Kong. The movement and intensity change of Aere over the northern part of the South China Sea remain uncertain for the time being, and its interaction with the northeast monsoon is also a determining factor. According to the present forecast track, the Hong Kong Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 tonight.

Hot weather might cause adverse health effects. The Observatory advises the public to stay on the alert.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
