Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon affected southern China today. Locally, it was hot with sunny periods and a few showers. Meanwhile, Aere intensified from a tropical depression into a tropical storm today. Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Aere, it will be windier with rain over the south China coastal areas during the weekend and early next week.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Friday, 7 Oct 2016)

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. Isolated thunderstorms at first. Sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will range between 26 and 30 degrees. Moderate north to northeasterly winds, becoming fresh later.

Outlook : Windier with a few rain patches over the weekend and Chung Yeung Festival holiday.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Aere with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.6 degrees north, 117.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 14 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

    North to northeast force 4 to 5, occasionally force 6 in south.
    A few showers and isolated thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    Northeast force 6 to 7, becoming force 8 to 9.

    Shanwei:

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Aere was estimated to be about 400 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.6 degrees north 117.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 14 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

    Even though Aere continues to edge closer to the south China coastal areas, its circulation is relatively small. It will only bring significant impact to local weather when it gets relatively close to Hong Kong.

    Aere is expected to slow down while the northeast monsoon will persist over southern China. There is still rather large uncertainty in Aere's movement and intensity change in the next few days.

    According to the present forecast track, Aere will maintain at a distance from Hong Kong during the day on Friday. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 on Friday morning is not high.

    1. People living in wooden huts and in low-lying areas should take necessary precautions against strong winds and flooding.

    2. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    4. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    5. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 061200 UTC, Tropical Storm Aere (1619) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N) one one seven point nine degrees east (117.9 E) and is forecast to move west at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (05 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note

      

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
