    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 10 a.m., Tropical Storm Aere with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.6 degrees north, 116.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west slowly, lingering over the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

    North force 4 to 5, occasionally force 6.
    A few showers.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    East to northeast force 7 to 8, up to force 9 in south.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 10 a.m., Tropical Storm Aere was estimated to be about 290 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.6 degrees north 116.3 degrees east). It is forecast to move west slowly, linger over the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

    The circulation of Aere remained small. It is expected to continue to be relatively slow-moving in the next couple of days.

    According to the present forecast track, Aere will maintain at a distance from Hong Kong today. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 during the day is relatively low.

    The northeast monsoon persists over southern China. There is still uncertainty in Aere's movement and intensity change in the next couple of days.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    4. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    5. Owners of shop signs, advertisements and TV aerials which overhang public thoroughfares or which are situated on tops of buildings should make sure that the fastenings and framework of these structures are secured.

    6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 070000 UTC, Tropical Storm Aere (1619) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N) one one six point five degrees east (116.5 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (06 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note

      

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
