Warnings:
Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

Weather Situation:
At noon, Tropical Storm Aere with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.6 degrees north, 116.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move slowly, lingering over the northern part of the South China Sea and intensifying gradually.

North force 4 to 5, occasionally force 6.
A few showers.
Moderate to rough seas.

Nan'ao:
East to northeast force 6 to 7, up to force 8 in south.

The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 3 p.m., Tropical Storm Aere was estimated to be about 280 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.7 degrees north 116.2 degrees east). It is forecast to be slow-moving, linger over the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 070600 UTC, Tropical Storm Aere (1619) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point seven degrees north (20.7 N) one one six point two degrees east (116.2 E) and is forecast to be slow-moving for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (06 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
