Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon continued to affect southern China today. Locally, it was mainly cloudy with a few squally showers. There were sunny intervals during the day. A replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach southern China during the weekend. Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Tropical Cyclone Aere, it will be windier with occasional showers over the south China coastal areas during the weekend and early next week.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Saturday, 8 Oct 2016)

Mainly cloudy with a few squally showers. Temperatures will range between 25 and 30 degrees. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, occasionally strong on high ground.

Outlook : Windier with occasional showers in the following couple of days.

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Shanwei. Gale force winds in Nan'ao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Aere with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.0 degrees north, 116.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move north slowly, lingering over the northern part of the South China Sea.

    North force 4 to 5, occasionally force 6.
    A few squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    East to northeast force 6 to 7, up to force 8 in south.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Aere was estimated to be about 260 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.0 degrees north 116.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move north slowly, lingering over the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Aere has a rather small circulation and is slow-moving. Moreover, as local winds will be mainly from the north, winds generally are not expected to strengthen significantly due to sheltering by local terrain. The chance of issuing Strong Wind Signal, No.3 on Saturday morning is not high. Thereafter, the wind strength in Hong Kong will depend on Aere's future movement and intensity change.

    Under the combined effect of Aere and the northeast monsoon, there will be occasional showers in Hong Kong in the next few days. Winds and waves will also be stronger over offshore waters and seas south of Hong Kong.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    3. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 071200 UTC, Tropical Storm Aere (1619) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point zero degrees north (21.0 N) one one six point four degrees east (116.4 E) and is forecast to move north slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 45 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (06 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
