Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 20:45 HKT 08/Oct/2016

Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 9 p.m., Tropical Storm Aere was estimated to be about 300 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 21.8 degrees north 117.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move northeast slowly and linger over the northern part of the South China Sea.

Aere showed sign of weakening. During the past few hours, its distance from Hong Kong was increasing gradually.

A replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach the coastal areas of Guangdong tonight, bringing relatively cooler weather to Hong Kong. The Observatory will monitor the movement and intensity changes of Aere to consider the need of keeping the Standby Signal, No. 1.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn were 55 kilometres per hour.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Since there may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

2. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
