Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is affecting southern China.

At noon, Tropical Depression Aere was centred about 130 kilometres northeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to move southwest slowly and dissipate gradually over the northern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Dry with sunny periods in the afternoon. One or two rain patches tonight. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, occasionally strong on high ground.

Outlook : A few rain patches in the next couple of days, windy offshore.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At noon, Tropical Depression Aere with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.6 degrees north, 117.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move southwest slowly and dissipate gradually over the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North force 4 to 5, occasionally force 6.
    A few rain patches later.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    North to northeast force 7 to 8, cyclonic force 7 to 8 in south.
    Scattered showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough to very rough seas.

    Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 7 to 8.
    Isolated showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough to very rough seas.

    South of Hong Kong:

II.  SYNOPSIS OF THE WEATHER SITUATION :
     THE NORTHEAST MONSOON IS AFFECTING SOUTHERN
     CHINA.  TROPICAL STORM AERE HAS WEAKENED INTO A
     TROPICAL DEPRESSION. AT 8 A.M., TROPICAL
     DEPRESSION AERE WAS CENTRED NEAR 21.6 DEGREES
     NORTH, 117.5 DEGREES EAST.  IT IS FORECAST TO BE
     SLOW-MOVING AT FIRST AND MOVE SOUTHWEST ACROSS
     THE NORTHERN PART OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA LATER.
     IT WILL CONTINUE TO WEAKEN.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 100300 UTC, Tropical Depression Aere (1619) with central pressure 1000 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two one point six degrees north (21.6 N) one one seven point four degrees east (117.4 E) and is forecast to move southwest slowly and dissipate gradually over the northern part of the South China Sea for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Dissipated over sea.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (09 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
