Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is bringing generally fine weather to the coast of Guangdong.

At noon, Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 600 kilometres east of Manila. It is forecast to move west at about 12 kilometres per hour towards Luzon. Meanwhile, the tropical depression over the central part of Vietnam was centred about 410 kilometres east-southeast of Vientiane. It is forecast to move west at about 14 kilometres per hour towards inland and dissipate gradually.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Mainly fine in the afternoon. Cloudy periods tonight. Moderate to fresh east to northeasterly winds.

Outlook : Mainly fine in the next couple of days. Windier with squally showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At noon, the tropical depression over the central part of Vietnam with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.8 degrees north, 106.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 14 kilometres per hour towards inland and dissipate gradually. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 13.7 degrees north, 126.5 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 12 kilometres per hour towards Luzon.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 140000 UTC,the tropical depression over central Vietnam with central pressure 1000 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one six point eight degrees north (16.8 N) one zero six point seven degrees east (106.7 E) and is forecast to move west at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (13 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
