At 6 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 29 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 74 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Tropical Cyclone Sarika is moving across the central part of the South China Sea. According to the present forecast track, the Hong Kong Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 tonight. Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Sarika in the next couple of days, it will be windier in the south China coast. The weather will also deteriorate with squally showers. The public should remain vigilant and take precautions as early as possible.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is affecting the coast of Guangdong.

At 4 p.m., Typhoon Sarika was centred about 580 kilometres east of Xisha. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea. Meanwhile, Typhoon Haima was centred about 170 kilometres northeast of Yap. It is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy. Sunny intervals tomorrow morning. There will be a few showers later. Temperatures will range between 25 and 29 degrees. Moderate to fresh northeasterly winds. Winds will strengthen gradually tomorrow.

Outlook : Heavy rain and squalls on Tuesday. Rain will ease off gradually in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 4 p.m., Typhoon Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 140 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.6 degrees north, 117.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    Northeast force 5 to 6, up to force 7 later.
    A few showers later.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    Northeast force 7, occasionally force 8.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.

    South of Hong Kong:
    Northeast force 6 to 7, becoming force 8 to 9 later.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 160900 UTC, Typhoon Sarika (1621) with central pressure 960 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one six point five degrees north (16.5 N) one one seven point eight degrees east (117.8 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 75 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (15 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
