Outlook : Sunny periods on Thursday. There will be heavy squally showers and swells on Friday and Saturday.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 18 October 2016

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and south of Hong Kong. Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    Severe Typhoon Sarika has weakened into a Typhoon. At 7 p.m., Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 130 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 19.4 degrees north, 109.5 degrees east, it is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Hainan. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 205 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 15.6 degrees north, 129.7 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the seas east of Luzon.

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East to southeast force 6 to 7, occasionally force 8.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough to very rough seas.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    East force 6 to 7.

    South of Hong Kong:

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    Severe Typhoon Sarika has weakened into a typhoon.

    At 7 p.m., Sarika was estimated to be about 580 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 19.4 degrees north 109.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Hainan.

    Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Sarika, occasional strong winds will still affect offshore waters of Hong Kong overnight. When Sarika moves further away from Hong Kong or weaken overnight, the Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Monsoon Signal to replace the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Kai Tak and Star Ferry were 48 and 47 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. You are advised not to delay in taking all precautions to protect your home or property. Make sure now that all loose objects are secure. Porch furniture, flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors. Check again and make sure all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    2. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    3. You should not relax taking precautions as strong winds are still blowing and unsecured objects may be blown down. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    4. It is not yet safe for small craft and fishing vessels to leave typhoon shelters.

    5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Typhoon Sarika (1621) has weakened into a Typhoon with central pressure 965 hectopascals. At 180900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of one nine point two degrees north (19.2 N) one zero nine point six degrees east (109.6 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 70 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 150 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 270 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Forecast position and intensity at 190900 UTC
    Two one point one degrees north (21.1 N)
    One zero seven point nine degrees east (107.9 E)
    Maximum winds 50 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (17 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
