Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Sarika moved across Hainan Island and weakened from a severe typhoon into a severe tropical strom gradually today. Its outer rainbands continued to affect the south China coast today. Locally, it was cloudy to overcast with heavy rain and squalls. More than 70 millimetres of rainfall were generally recorded over the territory, and rainfall over part of the territory even exceeded 150 millimetres. As Sarika moving across Beibu Wan and dissipating inland, rain will ease off and winds will weaken gradually in the next couple of days.

At 11 p.m., Super Typhoon Haima was centred about 830 kilometres east of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 350 kilometres south-southeast of Nanning. It is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Wednesday, 19 Oct 2016)

Cloudy with squally showers. Showers will ease off gradually. Temperatures will range between 24 and 27 degrees. Fresh east to southeasterly winds, strong offshore at first. Seas will be rough with swells.

Outlook : Sunny periods on Thursday. Heavy squally showers and swells on Friday and Saturday.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 11:30 p.m. on 18 October 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 11 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 19.8 degrees north, 109.2 degrees east, it is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 220 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 15.7 degrees north, 128.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon.

    East to southeast force 6 to 7, occasionally force 8.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    All signals were cancelled at 10:10 p.m.

    At 10 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 580 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 19.7 degrees north 109.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan.

    The Observatory has already issued the Strong Monsoon Signal.

    Occasional strong winds will still affect Hong Kong overnight. Members of the public should stay on the alert.

    Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Sarika (1621) has weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 975 hectopascals. At 181200 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of one nine point six degrees north (19.6 N) one zero nine point four degrees east (109.4 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 270 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Forecast position and intensity at 191200 UTC
    Two one point three degrees north (21.3 N)
    One zero seven point seven degrees east (107.7 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (17 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
