Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the coast of Guangdong.

At 5 a.m., Super Typhoon Haima was centred about 670 kilometres east-northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 290 kilometres south of Nanning. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan.

Weather forecast for today

Cloudy with squally showers. Showers will ease off gradually later. The maximum temperature will be about 27 degrees. Fresh east to southeasterly winds, strong offshore at first. Seas will be rough with swells.

Outlook : Sunny periods tomorrow. Heavy squally showers and swells on Friday and Saturday.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 5 a.m., Super Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 220 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.0 degrees north, 127.0 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Storm Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.2 degrees north, 108.4 degrees east, it is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 182100 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point three degrees north (20.3 N) one zero eight point four degrees east (108.4 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 192100 UTC
    Two two point one degrees north (22.1 N)
    One zero seven point six degrees east (107.6 E)
    Maximum winds 25 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
