At 10 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 97 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Widespread heavy rain may affect Hong Kong in a couple of hours. Members of the public should be on the alert.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is affecting the coast of Guangdong. Locally, more than 20 millimetres of rainfall were generally recorded this morning, and rainfall even exceeded 40 millimetres over New Territories East and Chek Lap Kok.

At 10 a.m., Super Typhoon Haima was centred about 540 kilometres east-northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 200 kilometres south of Nanning. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan.

Weather forecast for today

Cloudy with squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at first. Showers will ease off tonight. Fresh east to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first. Seas will be rough with swells.

Outlook : Sunny periods tomorrow. Heavy squally showers and swells on Friday and Saturday.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 9:30 a.m. on 19 October 2016

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    Severe Tropical Storm Sarika has weakened into a tropical storm. At 9 a.m., Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.8 degrees north, 108.1 degrees east, it is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 220 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.1 degrees north, 125.9 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) has weakened into a Tropical Storm with central pressure 988 hectopascals. At 190000 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point nine degrees north (20.9 N) one zero eight point two degrees east (108.2 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 200000 UTC
    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (18 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
