At 1 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 98 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.5. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Tropical Cyclone Haima will move across the northern part of Luzon and enter the South China Sea on Thursday morning. The Observatory will issue Standby Signal, No. 1 by then. According to the present forecast track, Haima will edge closer to the coast of Guangdong on Friday, and may skirt within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong, posing a threat to the territory. The weather is expected to deteriorate significantly on Friday. There will be frequent squalls and heavy rain. Seas will be rough with swells. Members of the public should remain vigilant and take all precautions as early as possible.

Gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour or above may continue to affect Hong Kong.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 2:30 p.m. today. Isolated squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is affecting the coast of Guangdong. Locally, more than 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over the urban areas from 8 a.m. to noon, and rainfall even exceeded 60 millimetres over parts of New Territories East.

At noon, Super Typhoon Haima was centred about 520 kilometres east-northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 180 kilometres south of Nanning. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour towards Guangxi and the northern part of Vietnam.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Cloudy with squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at first. Fresh east to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first. Seas will be rough with swells.

Outlook : Sunny periods tomorrow. Frequent heavy rain with squalls on Friday. Seas will be rough with swells. Rain will ease off later on Saturday.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At noon, Super Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 220 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.2 degrees north, 125.5 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.2 degrees north, 108.1 degrees east, it is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour towards Guangxi and the northern part of Vietnam.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 190300 UTC, Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point two degrees north (21.2 N) one zero eight point two degrees east (108.2 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (18 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
