At 4 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 98 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.2. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Tropical Cyclone Haima will move across the northern part of Luzon and enter the South China Sea on Thursday morning. The Observatory will issue Standby Signal, No. 1 by then. According to the present forecast track, Haima will edge closer to the coast of Guangdong on Friday, and may skirt within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong, posing a threat to the territory. The weather is expected to deteriorate significantly on Friday. There will be frequent squalls and heavy rain. Seas will be rough with swells. Members of the public should remain vigilant and take all precautions as early as possible.

Gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour or above may affect Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An intense rain band is affecting the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.

At 4 p.m., Super Typhoon Haima was centred about 440 kilometres northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the northern part of Luzon. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Sarika was centred about 120 kilometres south of Nanning. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour into inland Guangxi.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Cloudy with squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at first. Showers will ease off overnight. Sunny periods tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 25 and 31 degrees. Moderate east to northeasterly winds, fresh later tomorrow and there will be swells.

Outlook : Frequent heavy rain with squalls on Friday. Seas will be rough with swells. Rain will ease off later on Saturday.

    Super Typhoon Haima (1622) has entered the area of responsibility of the Hong Kong Observatory.
    At 190600 UTC, Super Typhoon Haima (1622) with central pressure 905 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one six point seven degrees north (16.7 N) one two four point seven degrees east (124.7 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 120 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles.

    At 190600 UTC, Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point six degrees north (21.6 N) one zero eight point one degrees east (108.1 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 5 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
